Pride and Prejudice 200th Anniversary Party Hop!

200 years old! Congratulations, Miss Jane Austen.
The 2005 film led me to read Pride and Prejudice for the first time. Months later, I came across the 1995 BBC production on YouTube. I watched it in segments over the course of a few days. I may have missed a few scenes. I have since acquired the full version so I hardly have an excuse for not enjoying the series in its entirety. The sole explanation is having watched the 2005 film first, for me, Matthew Macfadyen is Mr. Darcy. I cannot be persuaded to enjoy another actor’s portrayal of my favorite Jane Austen hero.
My sentiment towards the BBC version in no way affects my deep adoration for Colin Firth. In fact, there is one scene from the series that I've watched numerous times (on YouTube.)

This scene along with the great admiration for Colin Firth among JAFF readers prompted me to search the internet for every one of his films I could find. I have yet to be disappointed. I love his entire body of work, and I often find myself watching his movies repeatedly. Who knows how my life would be had I watched Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy portrayal first.
For Jane Austen’s birthday, I created a Pride and Prejudice video tribute and I offered Jane Austen note cards as part of a giveaway. I had so much fun that, in the spirit of the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, I decided to give away note cards again.

  3. I have watched four P&P movie adaptions and like them all for different reasons. As with the written retellings, it is amazing how each director pulls something different from the story. Nothing holds a candle to just reading the original though.

Thanks for offering up those lovely cards for a giveaway.

  4. I have to admit that I have not yet seen the 2005 film version so I cannot compare. I am partial to Colin Firth and was introduced to him as Mr. Darcy by a fellow Janeite who was particularly appalled that though I had read the book, I had never seen any film adaptation of it. Hot guy, period clothing. Yeah, I'll gladly rectify this over-site.

  6. I have watched the 2005 version a few times and, while there are some scenes I think are great (particularly the dance at the Netherfield Ball), I much prefer the 1995 version and Colin Firth. But I might feel the opposite had I seen the Matthew McFadyen one first.

Thank you for the giveaway, and Happy P&P Day!

  10. I love Matthew MacFadyen to this day! One of my favorite authors! I saw the 1995 edition, but I just think the 2005 movie is better. And I thought the wet white shirt, to use Miss Austen's word, vulgar. :) tee hee

    1. Regarding the wet shirt scene, I like how he cleaned up afterwards. ;-)

I really like the scene in the 2005 film when Darcy first proposed to Elizabeth ... wet hair and all.

  13. I read the book first when I was young then watch the 2005 movie version. When I heard other people praising the 1995 BBC mini-series, I decided to watch it too. I fell in love with Colin Firth's Darcy more than Matthew MacFadyen's portrayal.

    1. The 2005 film is certainly an intriguing adaptation. Having been my initial exposure to the story, it established my ideal representation of all the characters. I think that's another reason I prefer the 2005 film over the 1995 mini-series.

  15. I saw the miniseries first, then read the book, then saw the movie in theaters since by the time it came out I was thoroughly addicted. I think I like the miniseries better than the movie, but I like Matthew Macfadyen's Darcy more than Colin Firth's. :)
