Writing is fun…but what about editing?
I thought I might take a break from editing my latest story to share some insights on the plot. In this
case, the notion of taking a break is an understatement. Most days of late, I
feel it is my single greatest achievement. A fellow author recently reminded me
that writing is the fun part. How true! However, I digress.
I wrote this story nearly two years ago. The initial notes
on the characters’ goals, their motivations, and conflicts have long-since been
tossed. This is a good thing, for I am now able to read, revise, and edit the
story far more objectively.
In this story, the hero’s long-term goal is to win the
heroine’s heart and marry her. The heroine is a widow who suffered an abusive
marriage. Her long-term goal is to maintain her new-found independence. She
vows never to marry again.
This presents quite a challenge for the hero. In the
short-term his goal is simply to befriend the heroine and earn her trust,
whereas her immediate goal is to reclaim some of her stolen youth and enjoy
herself as much as possible.
The story is replete with conflict and danger, as well as
revelations and epiphanies, and most importantly a happily ever after ending.
Later, I will share more insights on the story conflicts and
character motivations. For now, are there any guesses on the identities of the
hero and heroine?
